A Weekend Wander Through Edinburgh’s Cobbled Charms

Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is a city steeped in history and legend. From the towering Edinburgh Castle to the cobbled streets of the Old Town, it’s a place that captures the imagination. So for my birthday this year I decided to take a tour around its cobbled streets and soak up its charm.

There are so many hidden gems waiting to be discovered. In this blog post, I’ll take you on a journey from the the timeless charm of Dean Village and Circus Lane to the summit of Arthur’s Seat

Stepping Back in Time: Dean Village and Circus Lane

Nestled alongside the Water of Leith, Dean Village is a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city. Once a bustling mill town, it’s now a picturesque haven of restored cottages, quaint bridges, and lush greenery. Take a stroll along the Water of Leith Walk and soak in the serenity, or grab a coffee at one of the charming cafes and watch the world go by. Which is exactly what I did enjoying a mug of coffee and an egg, halloumi and avocado bun at Cowan and Sons

Just a stone’s throw away from Dean Village lies Circus Lane, a fairytale-like lane of brightly coloured houses adorned with flowers and overflowing window boxes. It’s the perfect spot for a cute Instagram photo or simply to wander and admire the architectural beauty. Note if I ever win the lottery a reminder to myself to buy property in this lane and turn it into an Airbnb!

Panoramic Views: Calton Hill

For breathtaking views of the city and beyond, head to Calton Hill. This volcanic outcrop is dotted with monuments and memorials, each with its own fascinating story. The panoramic vista takes in Edinburgh Castle, Arthur’s Seat, and the Firth of Forth. On a clear day, I have been told you can even see the distant peaks of the Highlands.

Daring to be Wild: Arthur’s Seat

Edinburgh’s got a wilder side too – and it was definitely calling my name. I’m talking about Arthur’s Seat, an ancient volcano smack dab in the middle of the city, just begging to be conquered by adventurous souls like you and me.

This isn’t an easy hill walk. This is a rugged scramble up volcanic rock, with panoramic views that’ll make you weak in the knees (in the best way possible). Picture this: you’re huffing and puffing, but with every step, the city sprawls out beneath you like a tapestry of cobbled streets and soaring castles. It’s enough to make you forget about the burn in your calves and the howling wind that wants to knock you on your feet every chance it gets!

But Arthur’s Seat isn’t just about the views (although, let’s be honest, they’re epic). It’s about the journey. Every twist and turn of the path reveals hidden wonders. You’ll sweat, you’ll laugh, you might even shed a tear of joy at the summit.

So, ditch the tour buses and skip the whisky distillery tours (for now). Lace up your boots, grab your camera, and head to Arthur’s Seat. This is Edinburgh like you’ve never seen it before – raw, wild, and ready to blow your mind (and your Instagram feed).

The Kimpton Hotel: Modern Oasis in the heart of the City

If like me you like your comforts, after a day of exploring, make sure to check out the Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel, a haven of contemporary luxury. This stylish hotel is housed in a Georgian townhouse and boasts elegant rooms, a beautiful garden café and a spa that offers the ultimate in relaxation…and after 2 days of walking everywhere finishing my day off with a swim, sauna & steam was the ultimate luxury!

While there make sure to check out Baba, a hidden gem offering a unique fusion of Middle Eastern and Scottish cuisine. I was blown away by their incredible selection of dishes. I’m still dreaming about that sweet potato (seriously, I’m planning to recreate it for the family this weekend – wish me luck!). The octopus and prawn skewer…unforgettable. It’s the kind of meal that just makes you so happy!

A City that has everything!

Edinburgh isn’t just a city, it’s a tapestry woven with ancient history and modern swagger. One cobbled turn in Dean Village, and I was transported to a quaint fairytale, bakeries filling the air with sugary promises. Circus Lane surprised me with its whimsical swirl of colourful houses, each a mini masterpiece. From the windswept grandeur of Calton Hill, I surveyed the city’s sprawl, ancient and new, side by side. And then, the Old Town’s hidden closes, like time capsules waiting to be cracked open, whispered tales of past lives.

Edinburgh, I finally see you – not just the iconic landmarks, but the hidden gems, the whispers of stories in every nook and cranny. Whether you’re a history buff drawn to Arthur’s Seat’s volcanic majesty or a seeker of city chic, trust me, this city holds a secret corner just waiting to be discovered. Come…lose yourself in Edinburgh’s labyrinthine charm, and see for yourself why it’s more than just a city with everything – it’s a city that has it all for you.

Planning Your Trip

The best time to visit Edinburgh is during the spring or summer, when the weather is mild and the city comes alive with festivals and events. However, there’s a certain charm to Edinburgh even in the colder months, when the streets are less crowded and the atmosphere is more intimate.

Getting to Edinburgh is easy, with international flights arriving at Edinburgh Airport. Once you’re there, the city is very walkable, although you can also use the tram or bus system to get around.

When it comes to accommodation, there are plenty of options to choose from, from budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels. The Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel is a great choice if you’re looking for something special, but there are many other charming hotels and guesthouses in the city centre.

No matter what your budget or interests, Edinburgh is a city that will leave you enchanted. So, pack your bags and start planning your trip today!

I hope this blog post has inspired you to visit Edinburgh and experience its unique blend of charm and mystery.
