When travelling to Puglia one of the destinations on everyone’s lips is Polignano a Mare. Since I was heading to Puglia this summer, I was looking forward to spend some time discovering this place and see what the fuss is all about!

Without a doubt the main attraction and what probably makes this place famous amongst travellers is the beautiful and picturesque beach Cala Porto (also known as Lama Monachile). This small pebbly beach is the heart of Polignano. Nested between limestones cliffs, beautiful white-washed houses and its spectacular crystal-clear green waters it is indeed a little gem of a place!
And the view from the Balconata sul Mare of the beach is not to be missed…let me show you how stunning it is: The centro storico is also very pretty. The narrow streets, the intense light bouncing off the white-washed houses and the poetry which can be found on its walls and doors really makes for some beautiful pictures. How to get to Polignano a MareThe easiest way to get to Polignano is without doubt by car. If you are flying into Bari or Brindisi airport, car rental is available but just be warned, the motorway that takes you to Polignano is not really tourist-friendly! You can also get to Polignano by train or by bus which will only set you back a few euro.
Fun fact about Polignano a Mare
Let me sing you a song…
Volare oh, oh
Cantare oh, oh, oh
Nel blu degli occhi tuoi blu
Felice di stare quaggiù
Nel blu dipinto di blu
Felice di stare quaggiù
Nel blu dipinto di blu
Felice di stare quaggiù
Con te
The world-renowned song ‘Nel blu dipinto di blu’ best known as Volare was written by Domenico Modugno, and guess where he is from? You’ve guessed it…Polignano a Mare! Polignano’s most famous character with even a statue of him in town!
What did I think about Polignano a Mare? It’s a great spot to stop for half a day, maybe a full day if you plan going for a dip! Best time of the day to visit is at sunrise…the early morning light against the cliffs and the white-washed houses is stunning with the plus side that there will be less peoaple around!
If you are visiting Puglia I would definitely check it out!
