If you’re looking for a city that gives you a little bit of everything: ancient history, coastal chill, good food and a few “wait, am I really standing on a volcano?” moments…then Catania is your spot.
It’s messy in the best way: loud markets, busy piazzas, locals chatting over espresso and Mount Etna majestic sights in the background!
Here’s how I spent 48 hours in Catania and why this city totally stole my heart.
Day 1: Markets, Monuments & a Sunset on Mount Etna
Morning: Straight to the Market
I always think the best way to get to know a city is through its market and Catania’s La Pescheria does not disappoint. It’s loud, chaotic and completely alive. You’ll hear vendors shouting prices in a language that doesn’t even resemble Italian, smell fresh seafood and lemons in the air and maybe even get splashed a little by fishmongers showing off their catch of the day. Be prepared it’s a little intense but incredibly fascinating!
Grab a coffee/cocktail (whatever takes your fancy) from a nearby café like the famous Prestipino al Duomo or a gelato from Don Peppinu, wander through the stalls and just soak it all in. It’s Sicily in a nutshell.

Mid-Morning: The Heart of Catania
From there, it’s a short walk to Piazza del Duomo, the city’s main square. This is where you’ll find Catania’s famous Elephant Fountain: a black lava-stone elephant that’s become the city’s symbol. Legend has it, it protects Catania from Mount Etna’s eruptions (so far, so good).

Right next door is the Catania Cathedral (Duomo di Sant’Agata). Pop inside, it’s beautiful, calm and a nice break from the heat.

By now, you’ll be ready for lunch. Head to Scirocco Lab one of my absolute favourites. It’s cool, modern and where you’ll find the locals grabbing a bite too. Think fresh seafood directly from the fish market in the piazza. The vibe is relaxed and the staff are lovely.

Afternoon: A Little Peace Before the Volcano
After lunch, take a slow walk through Villa Bellini Gardens. It’s green, peaceful and gives you a little break before the big adventure ahead.
Because yes…you’re going up Mount Etna.

Evening: Sunset on Mount Etna 🌋
I joined Exclusive Etna Excursions and it was honestly one of the best things I’ve done in Sicily. You go up to around 2,000 meters, walking on black volcanic rock with the incredible views of the craters and the valley below. And when the sun starts to set? The whole mountain glows orange and gold.
It’s one of those “wow, this is real life” moments.

Dinner
Back in town, I went for dinner at Trattoria del Cavaliere a proper local spot with delicious food, friendly service and all the classic Sicilian comfort food. Perfect end to the day.

Day 2: Sea Breezes, Ruins & Golden Hour Views
Morning: Out on the Water
Day two starts on a boat…literally. I booked a boat tour with Etna Tribe and it was such a fun way to see Catania from a different angle. You cruise past lava cliffs, swim in clear blue water and see Mount Etna from the sea. Total summer bliss.

Lunch & Beach Time:
After the boat, spend your afternoon at Sable Sale, a beach club that’s perfect for chilling with a spritz in hand. The vibe is laid-back: music, sunshine and sea breeze.

Afternoon: A Touch of History
If you’ve got the energy, check out the Teatro Romano and Odeon, ancient ruins tucked right in the city. It’s wild how history just sits there, blending into modern life.
Evening: Sunset & Wandering
For your last evening, climb up to the Abbey of Saint Agatha for an epic sunset view over the rooftops and Etna in the distance.

Then wander from Piazza dell’Università to Piazza Scammacca, stopping wherever looks good for an aperitivo or pizza (honestly, you can’t go wrong).

Dinner
I loved U Fucularu for traditional Sicilian food and wine – simple, delicious, and local.

Where to Stay
I stayed at Il Principe Hotel, which is super central and perfect if you’re doing a short trip. You can walk pretty much everywhere and the rooms are lovely.
Final Thoughts
Catania surprised me in the best way. It’s not polished or picture-perfect but that’s exactly why it’s so special. It’s real. It’s passionate. It’s full of life and spicy. If you’re after a mix of city vibes, beach time and a bit of adventure, Catania’s got you covered. Plus it’s a great destination for solo travellers.
And yes…standing on an active volcano? Totally worth it!
Happy Travels xoxo
