Discovering Puglia: Monopoli

The mission this summer was to visit has much as possible of Puglia, the place where I lived for the first 14 years of my life.

I had a plan of action typed up on an A4 sheet of paper and delivered to my dad a week before our departure! He laughed of course, knowing fine well that it would have been virtually impossible to fulfil my wish list!

After our trip to Polignano a Mare, we drove to Bari to meet the family. In the afternoon while my dad slept in my Zia Annarita’s garden, my cousins – Maura & Gianluca – took me out sightseeing. Our destination: Monopoli.

Monopoli was not on my list. However, I am really glad I had the chance to visit this stunning seaside village filled with churches, whitewashed houses and beautiful piazzas and alleys.

Known for the Basilica of the Madonna della Madia, the 15th-century Castello Carlo V, the gozzi – typical local boats painted an unmistakable blue and red – and the many cafes, restaurants and beautiful local beaches only a short drive away, Monopoli is still very much an undiscovered place, but honestly, this only adds to its charm and authenticity.

In true Italian style, we went for an aperitivo…well two really! The first one was at one of the local beaches along the coast, Porto Marzano Beach Bar. Such a lovely little place with great music, a lovely sandy beach and even yoga classes at sunset.

The second one was a pub in the centro storico di Monopoli called Sottocoperta. With a glass full of wine and a bowl of tarallini and green juicy olives I was in heaven! Doesn’t really take a lot to make me happy, right?

If you find yourself in Puglia, I would recommend visiting Monopoli, even making this area your base from which you can travel to all destinations across Puglia.

I love the fact that the locals hardly speak English, that there are less tourists around comparing to the likes of Polignano a Mare and Alberobello and that it feels like you are stepping back in time! Another hidden gem of the Adriatic and Southern Italy and one not to be missed!
