While in Venice, make sure to visit the islands of Murano and Burano.
We took the vaporetto line 4.1 from San Zaccaria just off Piazza San Marco which takes approx. 40min to get to Murano. Don’t forget to be camera ready when leaving the dock as the journey offers charming views of the piazza from the water. The vaporetto costs €7,50 and it’s a great and cheap way to see the islands at your own pace.
Murano, our first stop of the day, is known world-wide as the island of glass since the late 1200 when all glass making factories were relocated to the island, after a number of devastating fires. While in Murano check out the Museo del Vetro where you can learn about the history of glassmaking and where you can purchase beautiful souvenirs. If you have time, I would also check out one of the workshops to actually see how the glass is made, it’s incredibly fascinating.
After a walk around the island and a quick bite in one of the local bars, we took the ferry to Burano which takes approx. 30min. Burano is known for its lace-making and also for the brightly coloured fishermen’s houses ever-so popular amongst instagramers. Places to visit while in Burano are the Pescarìa Vecia where you can admire the stunning sunsets over the lagoon, the leaning tower of Burano and the three main streets Via Giudecca, Via San Mauro and Via San Martino Sinistro, full of craft shops, small restaurants and let’s not forget the pretty coloured houses.
