Carnival
A lot of people have asked me why for two years running I have travelled to Venice during the carnival season which every year brings approximately 3 million visitors to the city…and I say why not!! Yes it’s busy, yes if you don’t do your research and book in advance prices might be pretty steep and a lot of the landmarks will be crowded with tourists trying to take that perfect instagramable picture, but this annual event is nothing less than extraordinary set in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It’s really not hard to see why I am planning a third trip!
The festival, which ends 40-days before Easter on Martedì Grasso/Shrove Tuesday, has been around since 13th century. History tells us that during the Austrian conquest in 1798, a ban was imposed on masks and the carnival itself. For years many traditions were lost until the Italian government brought back the festivity in 1979 as a way to celebrate Venice’s history and culture. Today the Venetian Carnival is renowned for the many events all around the city, for its beautiful Venetian masks and also because the whole city becomes alive indulging in all sorts of temptations and mischiefs knowing fine well that she will have to give it all up for Lent!
At least once in your lifetime you will have to see Venice during the carnival!
Tip N. 4…if you go to Venice during the carnival plan in advance and I suggest pre-booking not to be left disappointed. 2020 carnival dates are the following:
- Saturday, 8 February and ends on Tuesday, 25 February
